Biography:

ABBOTT, James (1750-1815: ancestry.com)

He was born on 18 Oct. 1750 at Concord NH, one of twelve children of James Abbott (1717-1803), a veteran of the Indian Wars and a deacon in the Congregational Church, and his wife Sarah Bancroft (1721-65). The younger Abbott was a farmer. No marriage record has been found but family histories give the name of his first wife, whom he married in Concord in 1781, as Zelpha Smith. They farmed first in Haverhill NH, where two children were born, and then settled in Groton VT where a third child was born but the mother died, in 1784. In Haverhill on 25 Jul. 1785 Abbott married a second time; his wife was Mehitable ("Hitty") Headen, with whom he had six children, four of whom grew to maturity. Abbott was active in the Congregational church founded at nearby Peacham VT and was chosen as selectman for Groton in 1797. In 1807 he sold the Groton farm and moved away—some accounts say, to Ohio, where he died on 1 Aug. 1815. No death record or newspaper report has been discovered to confirm this claim.
