Biography:

WRANGHAM, William (1784-1832: findmypast.co.uk)

He was baptised on 10 Mar. 1784 at Sheffield Cathedral, the son of John Wrangham (1758-1825) and his wife Sarah Down (1759-1832), of Louth, Lincolnshire, who had married at St. James, Louth, on 5 Aug. 1781. He married Mary Dunn (1780-1849) on 12 Mar. 1809 at Louth, with his residence recorded as Sheffield. They had at least two sons and a daughter. He was first identified by the Sheffield poet and scholar John Holland (q.v.) in 1843 and further research by Josiah Miller revealed him to be a jeweller and silversmith who had a shop on Mercer Row, Louth. Miller further noted his success in business and that he was “able to give his family a superior education.” However, he also noted he had given up his position as churchwarden in 1821 after “reverses.” These probably led to his bankruptcy in 1831 after several years of insolvency proceedings. He died, aged 48, of apoplexy at Louth on 18 Feb. 1832.
