Biography:

MUDGE, Richard Commins (1784-1844: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised on 29 July 1784 at Ashburton, Devon, the son of Joseph Mudge and his wife, Elizabeth Cummings, who had married in 1780. Nothing is known of his education and early life. He married Mary Akerman (1780-1824) on 25 May 1812 at Burton, Bradstock, Dorset. They went on to have six children. His wife died due to childbirth complications in May 1824. He married Mary Gammell (1793-1836) on 19 Feb. 1829 at Symondsbury, Dorset. They had three children. He then married Elizabeth (Betsy) Jolliffe (1811-92) on 2 Oct. 1839 at Melcombe Regis, Dorset. They had two sons. In the 1841 Census he was listed as an accountant. He was buried on 13 Apr. 1844 at All Saints, Wyke Regis. As stated on the title-page of his first work, he was a freemason and member of All Souls Lodge, Melcombe Regis, and lived opposite the masonic hall. The printer, John Commins of 77 St. Mary Street, Weymouth, may have been a relative: he also printed Mudge’s Hymns, Elegies, Epitaphs [etc.] in 1838.
