Biography:

MOORE, James Lovell (1751-1828: ancestry.o.uk)

He may have been the James Lovel Moore (sic) baptised on 13 Oct. 1751 at Poole, Dorset, the son of Thomas Moores (sic) and his wife Sarah Morris, who had married on 16 Dec. 1750. His will lists various property assets in Dorset: a cottage at Colehill Lane, Wimborne, an estate at Gussage All Saints, and  freehold property at Sturminster Newton. Nothing is known of his education. He appears not to have gone to Oxford or Cambridge and was ordained deacon (1773) and priest (1774) as “literate.” He was appointed curate of Little Berkhamstead, Herts., in 1773 but this may have been only his licensing appointment. His obituary states that he had been at St. Leonard’s, Bengeo, Herts., for 52 years and was chaplain at the county gaol for 41 years. His marriage of 1782 records him as Rev. James Moore, of All Saints, Hertford, and the title page of his poem, The Columbiad (1798), listed here, describes him as Master of the Free Grammar School Hertford, so it seems likely he remained in Hertfordshire throughout his life. He is, however, also recorded as the perpetual curate of St. Mary’s, Denham, Suffolk (1789-1813). His official appointment as vicar of St. Leonard’s Bengeo, Herts., (1807-29) probably omits time as curate. He married Elizabeth Evans on 13 June 1782 at St. George’s, Hanover Square, Westminster, London. They had five children, four of whom survived into adulthood and were the  beneficiaries of his will. His wife Elizabeth died in 1815. He died on 12 Nov. 1828, aged 77, at the vicarage, Bengeo, and was buried there on 20 Nov. There are still gravestones for him and his wife in St. Leonard’s churchyard. His works on religious topics have long been forgotten: A View of the External Evidence of the Christian Religion(1791), A Treatise on the Plenary Inspiration of the New Testament (1793), Commentaries on the Corruptions and Erroneous Doctrines of the Roman Catholic Religion (1810).
