Biography:

MACDOUALL, Charles (1813-83: findmypast.co.uk)

MacDouall and MacDowall are interchangeable spellings and likely he was the Charles MacDowall born at Colinton, Edinburgh, to Charles MacDowall and Catherine McVittie. He was educated at the Edinburgh High School and, from 1826, at Edinburgh University where he was taught by John Wilson (q.v.); Winter Leaves is dedicated to Professor Wilson by “two of his former pupils.” He became Professor of Latin at Queen’s College, Belfast. Twice, in 1847 and 1851, he applied unsuccessfully for a chair in languages at Edinburgh University; the University did, however, confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws in 1858. MacDouall remained at Queen’s College until his death on 24 Feb. 1883. He was married and his wife’s first name was Euphemia; they seem not to have had any children. Queen’s University, Belfast, holds an extensive collection of his writings and books from his collection, likely purchased at the auction of his library in 1884.
