Biography:

MACBURNIE, Robert (1791-1838: findmypast.com)

No birth record has been found but MacBurnie (or McBurnie) claimed to have been born in Dumfries, Scotland, and to have been held, an infant, in the arms of Robert Burns (q.v.). Nothing is known of his education. He began working as a hawker or pedlar but settled in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and established a business prosperous enough to enable him to found a Mechanics’ Institute there. He married Mary Whitaker (b 1801) at St. Mary’s (Priory) church on 14 Dec. 1826 and was buried at the same church on 9 Apr. 1838. Two sons born in 1829 and 1831 survived him and are recorded along with their mother in the 1841 Census. There are no other known publications.
